How has In-flight Entertainment Changed over the Years?
There might not be much to be said for the food on many flights still, but the entertainment offered on long-haul journeys is increasingly impressive. This is just as well, as being trapped inside a small compartment for hours on end, travelling at tens of thousands of feet and hundreds of miles an hour, is something that demands a certain level of diversion. Thankfully people have been developing systems for just this for almost a hundred years now.

Flight itself was the entertainment in the early days, with people paying a great deal for this novel from of transport. But by the 1920s companies had already started to look into ways of supplying that extra little bit of entertainment. Movies were first played on a flight over Chicago in 1921, although this was a sightseeing flight, and the movie was an information reel about the city.
By the time we reached the 1960s the need for entertainment was clear to airlines. Long distance flights were more commonplace, and people became restless if left to their reading. In 1961 the initial feature movies were shown on flights, with By Love Possessed – whatever that is – being the star attraction. Movies were also especially made for the airlines, and played on compact film reels.

It wasn't until the explosion of long-distance air travel in the sixties that people really took notice of the entertainment on offer in-fight. This was the space age, and people wanted to feel that they were enjoying something futuristic. As such, companies looked for any development they could get their hands on. In 1961 a movie called By Love Possessed was shown during a flight, and from there the 'in-flight movie' became commonplace.
Air travel might not hold the same mystique that it used to, but the airlines are constantly finding new ways to entertain people. Next on the list are feature length movies in 3D, from your own personal screen.
So it's been a long journey, but the quality of in-flight entertainment has got better and better over the years, believe it or not. If only they could pick some good movies.
